Google renamed the service Google Search Console in 2015, but many people still know it as Google Webmaster Tools. It is free to use. Once you verify that you own the website, it starts to collect data about how your pages appear in Google Search.

Reports worth checking regularly

The performance report lists the search queries that show your pages, with the number of clicks, impressions and the average position for each one. It is the quickest way to find pages that rank on page two and need a little more work.

The page indexing report shows which pages Google has added to its index and which it has left out, along with the reason. You can also ask Google to recrawl a page after you have fixed a problem. The sitemaps report confirms that your sitemap has been read, and the Core Web Vitals report highlights pages that load slowly for real visitors.

The links report is useful too. It shows which websites link to yours and which of your pages attract the most links, which helps you judge how your content is being shared.
